A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter and multiply within the urinary system, which includes the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. Most UTIs affect the bladder and urethra, though more serious infections can spread to the kidneys. They are particularly common in women due to the shorter length of the urethra, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder.

Common symptoms include a burning sensation when urinating, frequent urges to urinate even when the bladder is nearly empty, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine. Some people may also experience pelvic pain, lower back discomfort, or traces of blood in the urine. If the infection spreads to the kidneys, symptoms may include fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back.

UTIs are most often caused by bacteria from the digestive tract, typically Escherichia coli (E. coli), which can enter the urinary tract through the urethra. Risk factors include poor hygiene, dehydration, sexual activity, holding in urine for long periods, and using irritating hygiene products. Women who are pregnant or postmenopausal are also at higher risk due to hormonal changes.

Good hygiene and hydration are key to preventing UTIs. Drinking plenty of water helps flush bacteria from the urinary system, while urinating soon after sexual activity reduces the chance of infection. Wiping from front to back and avoiding scented soaps or sprays around the genitals can also help protect against bacterial spread.

Most UTIs are mild and clear quickly with proper care and medical treatment if needed. Resting, staying hydrated, and avoiding caffeine or alcohol can ease symptoms. It’s important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist, worsen, or frequently recur, as untreated infections can lead to complications such as kidney damage.

While UTIs can be uncomfortable, they are very common and usually easy to treat. Adopting good daily habits and addressing symptoms early can prevent future infections and support long-term urinary health.

What is the best antibiotic for a UTI?

The most effective UTI treatment depends on the type of infection. Trimethoprim and Nitrofurantoin are commonly prescribed first-line antibiotics, helping to clear infections quickly. Amoxicillin for UTI may be used in certain cases when other treatments are not suitable.
